An important first step to postpartum planning is to know the signs and symptoms of perinatal mood disorders. Honestly, this is arguably the most important step.
Many women experience mood changes once baby arrives. There is a stage which is referred to as the 'baby blues' where women may experience mood swings and tearfulness. This stage usually occurs within the first week and can lasts approximately 6 weeks. This is a relatively common condition, occurring in 30-75% of women postpartum. More significant symptoms are experienced by 15-20% of women.
Over the next couple of weeks I will be sharing education around the most common perinatal mood disorders, how to know if you're predisposed, and how to find the right kind of support.
