I labor, there's a vast difference between going with the flow and letting someone else push your boat

Sometimes when people say they just want to “go with the flow” in birth what really happens is that they hand the control of their kayak to someone else, who is very happy to plan a different route entirely than the one most comfortable for the birthing woman, just because it’s more convenient.

Yes, sometimes we need help navigating tricky or unexpected channels in birth (hello #gestationalhypertension or #placentaprevia or #transversebaby …).

Truly going with the flow for most pregnancies, though? It means trusting your body to continue pregnancy all the way to birth, to know that early labor can take a while, to not let anyone hurry you along for starting labor or being in labor. To listen to your body and move freely…. There IS a flow to childbirth, and it’s beautiful. ❤️
