Number 3 on the list of things you didn’t know you could decline in labor: THE HOSPITAL GOWN!
Let’s face it, no one feels cute (much less safe) in a hospital gown. They’re rough to the touch, awkward in every way, and leave you feeling exposed and vulnerable. In what world does someone feel safe with JUST their ass hanging out? 🍑🍑🍑
So what should you wear instead?
Anything! But here are some tips we’ve gathered along the way:
✨Wear something comfy.
✨Wear something loose. Pulling off a tight sports bra or yoga pants is shockingly hard in the throes of labor.
✨Wear colors that bring you joy and calm.
✨Wear something you don’t mind getting icky.
Otherwise, it’s fair game! You can wear a dress, sweatpants, a ball gown, a robe, a bikini, or nothing. They even sell soft pretty hospital gowns on Amazon if you’re really REALLY wanting the button options.
The moment you put on a hospital gown, you are immediately in “patient mode” which is inherently disempowering. Birth is not like other medical events happening at a hospital. It is powerful and primal and and should be relatively autonomous! This is the chance to let your clothing reflect that.
